Patti LaBelle, Teddy Riley honored by National Museum of African American Music

The National Museum of African American Music will highlight the story of Black music from its African roots up to today’s music that shapes American culture.

On June 1, the National Museum of African American Music celebrated Black Music Month with the 2017 My Music Matters: A Celebration of Legends Luncheon. The banquet, held at City Winery in Nashville, Tennessee, was hosted by David Mann and featured honorees Patti LaBelle, Teddy Riley, Kirk Franklin and David Porter.

Special guests Mannie Fresh, Dave Hollister, Tamela Mann, Avery Wilson, Le’Andria and Kelly Price all performed to pay tribute to each legend.

“There are so many great artists that it’s great that Black music is getting more attention,” LaBelle said before the event. “Back in the day, it was so hard for us. The music today is innovative, thought-provoking and pure.  So this is good to see.”
