Chance gives away 30K backpacks and tickets at Bud Billiken Day Parade

Chicago’s Bud Billiken Day Parade is the longest running back to school parade in America and in its 88th year it still represents hope and the value of education. Hometown hero Chance the Rapper was grand marshal this year and gave out 30,000 backpacks at the parade.

After giving out backpacks, Chance announced he would be giving a free concert later in in the evening. All of the tickets were snatched up in a matter of 30 minutes.

The Bud Billiken Day parade was founded in 1929 by Robert Sengstake Abbott, founder of the Chicago Defender, on Aug.11, 1929. It’s a back to school parade and serves as a celebration for the children around Chicago. This multigenerational affair creates smiles wide enough to shine for days.
