The death of Charles Manson prompted GoFundMe to shut down a campaign started by the convicted mass murderer’s grandson. According to the NY Daily News, Jason Freeman started the GoFundMe campaign to cover travel and burial expenses for Manson who died last Sunday at the age of 83. Manson is America’s most well-known serial killer after a murderous rampage by his followers in 1969.

The killer and his followers tortured and murdered Sharon Tate Bianca and six others during a terrifying two-night murder spree. At the time Tate was 8 1/2 months pregnant, was stabbed repeatedly inside her Los Angeles house along with coffee heiress Abigail Folger, celebrity hairstylist Jay Sebring, and two others. The next night Manson and his followers brutally murdered wealthy grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary. He was later convicted of 9 murders and was serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole after the death sentence was briefly outlawed in 1972 by California. During his nearly 50 years in jail, Manson was denied parole numerous times, at his first hearing Manson had a swastika tattooed on his forehead. Manson stated that the reason he killed his victims was to start a race war.

According to Freeman, GoFundMe did not give an explanation as to why the campaign was pulled after raising just $979. He stated,”If we can’t raise money with GoFundMe, we’ll find another way. It will definitely be a group effort. It’s not just one person, it’s a lot of people holding hands.”

For now, Manson’s body remains unclaimed at with the Kern County Coroner. If no one claims the body for burial it will be cremated at the public’s expense.
