Dallas Mavs’ Nwanye Barnes starts her day with God, prayer and a little Beyoncé

Why is it important for the experienced Black women to reach back and help younger women of color?

It is our God-given responsibility to reach back and help our young women. Just as the women whose footprints we now walk in, we too are leaving a footprint, and it is vital to our young women’s success that we prepare them for what is to come. Our successes, our failures, our experiences are the blueprint for their undiscovered achievements.

What are three success habits you implement into your daily routine to maintain your success, sanity and peace of mind?

1. Prayer first thing in the morning prepares me for what I am about to encounter, and it helps me balance my thought life.

2. Listening to worship songs in the car on the way to the office — [and] sometimes Beyoncé — helps me get my mind right and ready for the day. … Beyoncé gives me that bit of fire I need to run my world.

3. I always check on a friend or family member before I go into the office. I want to make sure they’re good before I start my workday.

What is your proudest achievement?

One of my proudest achievements occurred when I was a single mother, raising my oldest son while working multiple jobs with no college degree. I knew I would raise him with the understanding of how important a college education was and, in order to teach him this very valuable lesson, I too needed to have a college degree. So, while working a full-time job and cleaning houses on the weekend, I worked countless hours and completed my bachelor’s degree. Only God Almighty got me through.
