Millennial Rashard Marshell built his empire the old-fashioned way

At 31, Rashard Marshell has already created a multimillion-dollar empire. With 80 employees and three upscale mega-salons in Los Angeles, Marshell continues to grow and build the integrity of his establishments, which include RVM Salons, RVM Cutz and RVM Twists.

He has also used his salons to give back by facilitating annual back-to-school drives, feed the homeless campaigns, and free haircuts to underprivileged youth.

Marshell recently took the time to share his secrets to business success with rolling out.

What inspired you to become a business owner?

Financial freedom inspired me to get into different business ownership opportunities. … I love the fact and idea that [there is]  no cap to success when you’re in control of your own destiny. If you want to work 24-7, do it. If you want to try something new, do it. You’re the enforcer, and no one can ever tell you, ‘Alright, you’ve had enough.’ Every day I’m inspired to live a better life that I create.

What have been the most difficult and the most rewarding moments?

The most difficult moments will always go back to learning who I am and what I stand for. You have to know your lane, create it and be consistent enough to keep it going. Every industry has the who’s who, and until you make a name for yourself, you’re nothing to people sometimes. However, I came out of the gate swinging and never looked back. … It has given my staff the opportunity to provide for their families and transforming people into their new looks.

Define innovation methods you apply to your business and life.

A great method I use is to always replay my day and see what I did wrong or what I did that was amazing, and tomorrow take that and apply myself 10 times more to be even better. I always support myself. Supporting yourself is the best thing you could ever do. I also go into all three of my salons almost daily to be hands-on with the day-to-day operations and to take on the lead of great customer service. At this level, I don’t have to be on-site, but I take pride in providing excellent customer service and an exceptional experience, so I’m on the ground daily.

Who do you consider your peers in your field?

It’s funny to hear this question because when I started I would reach out to everyone I thought was popping, but no one would reply. I took that energy and applied it and poured it into myself and said, “One day, they will know my name.” My peers and supporters have become my staff; we’ve got to have each other’s back[s] to advance.

Name three books that changed how you saw life and you recommend to others.

I’m not a heavy reader, but I like Money and the Law of Attraction by Esther and Jerry Hicks; The Twelve Universal Laws of Success by Herbert Harris, and Monetize Your Content by Lee Harris.
