Tennis champion Naomi Osaka has dominated the courts and, now that she is taking a break from the sport, the four-time grand slam singles champion plans to do the same in the world of beauty with her newly released skincare line, Kinlò. Translating to “gold” in Japanese and Haitian respectively, Kinlò was designed specifically for melanated skin.

With each item retailing at $20 or less, the line includes four main products to protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays. Included in the collection are the water-resistant and sweat-proof SPF 50+ Golden Rays Sunscreen, the Hydrating Golden Mist with healing properties of calendula and aloe vera, the anti-aging Hydrating Eye Cream, and the Hydrating Lip Balm. The formula of each product contains natural ingredients, like squalane, niacinamide, and hemp seed oil and, unlike your typical sunscreen line, does not leave a white cast.

“I was shocked when I learned about the statistics of skin cancer in the POC community, particularly about how much higher the mortality rate is for those of us who are diagnosed with skin cancer,” Osaka says about her inspiration behind starting her skincare line in an interview with Refinery 29. “I immediately wanted to facilitate conversation and help debunk the myths about us not needing to wear sunscreen because we have natural melanin – that’s really not true.”

The 23-year-old also admits it was her own experience with a sunburn that prompted her to wear sunscreen, as she wouldn’t ever wear it prior to that happening. “To be honest, I didn’t really start wearing sunscreen until the first time I went to Australia. The sun is so much stronger down there, so I actually got burnt – and that’s when I realized that my own natural melanin wasn’t enough to protect me, so I started wearing sunscreen,” she says.

The collection is available online now at Kinlo.com.
