Tiran Jackson is an inspirational speaker and coach that has gone through an incredible transformation and journey in his life. After surviving a traumatic accident that resulted in his wife’s death and having his left leg amputated, he had to learn how to overcome adversity following this unexpected tragedy. His journey to recovery revealed his level of resiliency and strength in dealing with adversity. He uses the lessons he learned through this process to inspire and motivate not just himself, but also his son, as well as others to find the strength to rise above the obstacles they face and rediscover their path in life.

Jackson spoke about his journey as a father in rolling out’s Father Coach Club series.

Do you think today’s fathers have things harder or easier than your father?
It’s more complicated now than it was for my dad. So many external influences, TV, YouTube, social nedia, and less communication make it more challenging to connect with your kids.

What do you enjoy most about being a father?
I love the fact that I get to see my son, who is clearly a part of me from looks, personality, attitude and demeanor, living his life and sharing with him the mistakes and successes that I’ve experienced to help make things better as he grows into a young man.

What was one of the hardest moments you had being a father, and why was it hard?
I had the unenviable responsibility of having to call my son from another country and inform him that my wife and I were in a tragic accident and that his mother had died as a result of it. The pain that I heard from him as he was processing the news was heartbreaking.

Which fatherhood experiences have taught you the most about yourself?
Having to guide my son as I was recovering from a tragic accident helped me understand how strong and resilient I was. It also revealed the emotional maturity needed to care for his feelings as we faced life together, without his mom.

Name one life lesson that no one taught you but should have.
One life lesson that I wish I were taught was how important it is to look for and find your passion in life and then follow that passion. That passion will keep you engaged and lead you to a life of fulfillment and closer to happiness.

Finish the sentence: Never give up on yourself because …
Your uniqueness has value. You have special gifts and traits that no one else in this world has. No one can do you better than you. All you need to do is focus on your passions and desires and work to be great at that!
