8 Black horror films to watch this spooky season

Spooky season is upon us, which means that it’s time for all things terror. If you do celebrate Halloween, that can look like pumpkin ghouls on your front porch, an elaborate costume for the actual day of Halloween, or visiting a haunted house with friends or family.


Whichever way you decide to commemorate the start of this holiday season, you can never go wrong with hosting a scary movie night. Horror films are one of the best ways to get into the Halloween spirit. So pull out the popcorn and wine, and cozy up in your living room this weekend with one of these eight Black horror films.


Tales From the Hood

A Spike Lee joint, this horror anthology film follows three drug dealers who have a run-in with an eccentric funeral director, Mr. Simms. He tells them four four horror stories that reflect themes from the African-American experience including police corruption, domestic abuse, racism and gang violence.


Bones

Bones is a 2001 American horror film starring rapper Snoop Dogg as a once-beloved slain numbers runner, Jimmy Bones, who rises from the grave to avenge his death.

Get Out

Jordan Peele’s Get Out was a box-office success and became an instant classic. The film follows Chris, played by Daniel Kaluuya, as he takes a weekend trip with his White girlfriend Rose to visit her parents. Seeming harmless at first, the family’s true frightening intentions are revealed as the weekend progresses.

Candyman (1992)

After a Chicago graduate student stumbles upon the urban legend of a murderous man who kills anyone that says “Candyman” five times in the mirror, she accidentally summons his spirit back to life.
