SZA has become a dominant figure in R&B and is being recognized for her artistry at this year’s Billboard Music Awards in March. The music and entertainment company announced on its platform that SZA is this year’s Woman of the Year.

SZA (her stage name was inspired by Wu-Tang Clan‘s RZA) released a chart-topping album titled SOS in December 2022, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. SOS became the second most streamed album for a female artist in a week and placed third in streaming among all albums in 2022.

“Since she burst onto the scene in 2017, SZA has defied genres and continually released raw, powerful songs which have landed her music on the Billboard charts,” said Billboard’s editorial director Hannah Karp shared in a recent press statement. “The release of her latest album, SOS, has solidified her as a distinct force in contemporary R&B and catapulted her into superstardom. We can’t wait to honor her as Woman of the Year.”

Quinta Brunson will host the Billboard Awards on March 1. Rapper Latto will also be honored during the ceremony with the Powerhouse Award. Previous Woman of the Year awards have been given to superstarstars like Cardi B in 2020 and Madonna in 2016.
