Detroit Recovery Project recently celebrated their 10-year anniversary with a phenomenal event at the Historic GEM & Century Theatre. Guests included R&B/soul singer Kem, Alexis Wiley, chief of staff for the City of Detroit, and words from President Barack Obama, all coming together to recognize the positive impact of Andre Johnson’s work as president and CEO of Detroit Recovery Project, a non-profit organization. DRP has been supporting and identifying those who were addicted and downtrodden along their road to recovery and a drug-free lifestyle.

At the event, courageous individuals shared their testimonies and praised administrators and counselors who took the journey with them to rebuild their lives. Board members were also on hand to partake in the celebration. Johnson, through his vision, and with the support of this board of directors shared how mentors like Dr. Trent are valuable and how influential he has been in making the Detroit Recovery Project a reality.

Detroit’s native son, Johnson, has been so successful at providing a space for individuals to be unashamed, where recovery is possible, believable and achievable. Also a native son, Grammy-nominated recording artist Kem shared how he’s stayed drug free for 25 years, transforming from zero to hero.

The miracle of recovery was the constant and resounding theme of the evening. There were many smiling faces among the crowd as Kem and others shared their stories with authenticity and dignity. For all, staying in recovery is their first thought of the day.

DRP empowers individuals, families and communities who are experiencing co-occurring mental illness, and substance use disorders. This is accomplished by ensuring access to integrated networks of effective and culturally competent holistic health services.

Congratulations to Johnson, the Detroit Recovery Project participants, Kem who live, thrive and enjoy a substance abuse-free lifestyle.
