Natural hair has always been in; however, the way women embrace their natural hair now is at an all-time high. Natural hair puffs, curly styles and even locks were a big deal at this year’s Bronner Bros. International Beauty Show. You hear many personal stories on how a woman went and got the “big chop” and how she is on her natural hair journey. If you don’t know what the big chop is, it is when a woman cuts off all her permed hair (chemically treated). For many, this symbolizes a journey of self-love.

While classes and exhibitions are the main attractions of the BB Hair Show, the real activity can be found on the showroom floor among the booths of stylists and vendors. Attendees at this year’s hair show didn’t disappoint in showing off their take on the latest trend, natural hair. Various styles from braids and twists to wash and go curls were everywhere. Our roving reporter, Tonja Prince, stopped several ladies to find out how they keep their hair moisturized and healthy.

Kathryn Griffin, owner of Phabulous Tresses in Louisville, said “Madam CJ Walker Beauty Culture Co-wash is a must.” She was more than happy to share some of the products she uses for healthy, hydrated natural hair. She follows that with Decca Plus Leave-In Conditioner and always ends with Deva-Curl Spray Gel.

The number one cause of tumbleweed looking and feeling hair is dehydration. In order to keep your hair nourished, you must moisturize it. It’s like watering the lawn. You must water your grass to keep it green and healthy. In turn, you must keep your hair moisturized to keep it from getting brittle and breaking.

Seated outside the class of Christina Carsillo, the Curly Hair Specialist, three naturally curly ladies were eager to share some hair tips. They all agreed that Cantu Leave-In Conditioner and Camille Rose products are essential for shine and combating the frizz that comes along with curly hair.

There are many products out there for natural hair and it seems that the combination is different for each person. Using those products along with a satin bonnet or pillowcase at night will make your crowning glory look less like a tumbleweed as well as prevent breakage.
