DeRay Davis ‘comes out’ as gay ally

Earlier this week, Booty Call and “Castle” actress Tamala Jones made her debut as an LGBT ally in a public service announcement for GLAAD’s new “Coming Out For Equality” campaign. Now, actor and funnyman DeRay Davis has joined the cause as well and his PSA has now hit the web.

As with all of the “Coming Out For Equality” PSA’s, Davis is standing behind a closet door as he rattles off things that are in his own closet. Of course, Davis makes sure to make it funny.

“Let’s get one thing straight. DeRay’s closet is dope! It’s big! I got all kinds of really expensive cars and clothes in there! Supermodels! I throw parties, celebrities stop by! It’s insane! I can’t keep TMZ out of it!” Davis claimed in an exaggerated, almost Bernie Mack-style voice.

But, as the funnyman’s tone shifted, he explained that while the closet may be the place for all those things, it should never be a place where LGBT people have to hide who they are for fear of prejudice and discrimination.

“Unfortunately, this is not my closet. This is the closet and it sucks! Nobody should feel like they have to hide in here, so I’m coming out – as an ally for equality,” says Davis.

Davis is quite the unlikely ally for GLAAD, but his contribution to the campaign can help to open up conversation about sexuality and diversity among black gay men and hopefully, inspire a sense of solidarity and brotherhood among men of all gender and sexual expressions.

Thankfully, he’s not alone. Check out some other men who have become unlikely LGBT allies below. – nicholas robinson
