With the news that Bill Cosby admitted in court years ago that he purchased Quaaludes with the intention of giving them to women before sex, many fans who once defended the beloved actor in the face of accusations from more than two dozen women that he drugged and raped them have, understandably, begun to believe that he really had raped his alleged victims. However, some are still holding out hope that Cosby is innocent, and that includes Whoopi Goldberg, who furiously defended him this week.

On Tuesday’s episode of “The View,” Goldberg, whose career was influenced by Cosby in the ’80s, defended Cosby against some of her co-hosts who believed his admission made him look guilty and made an insensitive joke about people taking Quaaludes in the ’80s.

“As a former Quaalude user … The ’80s were … They weren’t fun for everybody, clearly.”

She then added; “We’ll see what happens as more information comes out. People will make judgments. Save your texts, save your nasty comments, I don’t care. I say this because this is my opinion, and in America still, I know it’s a shock, but you actually were innocent until proven guilty. He has not been proven a rapist,” she said.

Granted, Cosby hasn’t been proved guilty in a court of law, but his statements, which were made under oath, are directly in line with what many of his accusers explained about their alleged rapes by him. And the reason he’s not been proved guilty yet is, in part, because the statute of limitations has run out on most of these rape accusations and he’s tried to pay off his accusers in order to keep them speaking out against him and taking him to court.

It’s clear that Americans don’t want to lose faith in their favorite TV dad, but the American public needs to take a step back and analyze whether it’s more important to protect a fictional TV character or to protect the voices and bodies of women.

But Goldberg wasn’t the only one on the panel defending Cosby. See what Raven-Symone had to say as well.
