Attendees will enjoy a curated listening session of vinyl records on the theme of โMaiden Voyagesโ with a focus on Philadelphia jazz histories.
โMaiden Voyageโ is a post-bop, modal masterpiece by Herbie Hancock released in 1965. Originally penned to evoke the โsplendor of a sea-going vessel on its maiden voyageโ the work is a sonic accompaniment to seeding thought processes of visualization, manifestation, journeying, and growth. In the decade after initial release, the tune was recorded by many artists, including TSOP, Jazz Fusion icon, drummer, and composer Norman Connors. The listening session will span 3-4 unique versions of โMaiden Voyageโ and related tracks, as well as musical maiden voyages or โfirstsโ, a term describing origins, unique collaborations, and more!
The lens of genealogy applied is non-linear, co-emphasizing ancestry and evolution within the constellation of Black music traditions. Thematic sonic curations are meant to connect musical threads inviting listeners to be present in communion together and appreciating Jazz-tinged sounds as a connection point we can access and uplift in our expression.
