Inspired by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the Civil Courage Prize is bestowed annually by the Train Foundation to the extraordinary few who resolutely demonstrate steadfast resistance to evil at great personal risk. Since 2000, the Prize has honored activists, journalists, opposition leaders, lawyers, authors, and rights advocates from across the globe working to make the world a safer and more just place. Former laureates include renowned Congolese surgeon and activist Dr. Denis Mukwege, Mexican journalist and rights activist Lydia Cacho Ribeiro, and the late Russian pro-democracy champion Alexei Navalny.
