No one saw this coming.

Execs at Universal Pictures were pretty confident that Jurassic World would open at No. 1, but no one could have predicted that the sci-fi blockbuster would not only take the top spot at the box office, but open to the tune of $511 million worldwide to overtake Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 ($483 million) and score the biggest opening weekend in movie history.

Of that half billion, $204 million was collected stateside to easily capture this weekend’s box office. Last week’s No. 1 film, the Melissa McCarthy comedy, Spy, claimed the No. 2 spot this week with $16 million. The Rock’s earthquake drama, San Andreas, came in third with an additional $11 million. Insidious Chapter 3 placed fourth this week with $7.3 million. And rounding out the top five is a cappella comedy, Pitch Perfect 2, which was able to re-enter the top five after falling to No. 6 the previous week.

Lastly, it looks like the big screen adaption of HBO’s hit series Entourage is something of a bust. While the movie is expected to make its money back next week in regard to the film’s overall budget of about $30 million, its lackluster box-office showing (worldwide $29 million) is regarded as a disappointment all around.
