Russell Taylor was crowned VH1’s first-ever crowd-sourced “You Oughta Know” winner and VH1 unveiled the New York native’s “War of Hearts” video back in December. We were able to catch up with Russell Taylor and ask him about his success.

What do you do and why do you pursue your passion?

I am a singer, and I own my own label. I am good at many things (blessing and a curse) but I am passionate about few … performing is number one.

How do you keep inspired?

I feed my spirit through, travel, art, food, good friends and family.

What is one thing you wish you knew before you started your own business?

I wish I knew that people let you down because it is human nature. I wish I knew not to take those let downs personally.

Where you see the future of your industry and why?

Music is changing. The entertainment business is changing. The key to success now is strategic partnerships and innovation. To win, you have to continue to create your own lane in an ever expanding highway.

What advice would you give to a new entrepreneur in your industry?

Dig in your heels, commit, surround yourself with good people and never give up on yourself or your dreams.
