On Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, Houston Community College opened its doors to the  African American National Spelling Bee Championships in the historical Heinen Theater. Fox 26 news anchor Jose Grinan served as master of ceremonies kicking off the spelling bee by introducing the judges; Donna Kilgore, Mena Freeman, Michael R. Harris and  Dr. Lisa Burrell.

“I do not have a college degree but I have always spoken with great elocution. I believe this stems from my love of words. The power of words can move mountains. That is why this bee is so important to our community” said spelling bee founder Robert Garner.

The middle school spelling bee participants haile from various academies, including Walipp Prep Academy, TSU Prep Academy and CORE Academy.  Celebrity guests Bun B and Darius Jay greeted the participating students and posed for photos with guests.

Sponsors for the spelling bee included; Silverlake Church, YK Creative, 1000 Men Empowerment group, Thinkzilla PR and the Texas Legislative Black Council, among others.
