While former NFL star Ray Rice and his legal team are fighting for his right to return to the league, his wife, Janay Rice, is fighting a battle of her own. Although Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, is described as a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries that falls on the eve of the liturgical celebration of All Saints’ Day, where children dress up in costumes, some individuals use the occasion to poke fun at sensitive issues.

Throughout the last week, our Facebook and Twitter feeds have been flooded with offensive costumes in search of a few laughs but one costume in particular poked fun at the Rice family.

Shortly after responding to a Twitter follower who suggested that her domestic violence incident occurred because she married a black man, Rice was forced to relive the horrible occurrence when the photo below surfaced, featuring a man dressed as the former Baltimore Raven, holding a black blow-up doll face down on the ground as if he were re-enacting the abuse.

Janay tweeted the following responses:

We can only imagine Rice’s pain as she has to relive the abuse publicly. We hope that people stay away from this costume and recognize that domestic violence is a serious matter, not a laughable issue.

As for the culprit who thought that dressing up to mock a crime that plagues 1 in 4 women, we say shame on you! –ruthie hawkins/@ruubabie
