My ship The Inspiration

‘Don’t drink the water’ and ‘watch out for iguanas.’ That’s the advice that replayed in my mind as I stepped onto Mexican soil, because umpteen people had reiterated it as they each thought they were giving me original advice. I’ll admit, when my aunt proposed a family cruise to Mexico in honor of my cousin graduating from college, images of muddy streets and contaminated water played in my mind, too.

This was my second cruise, with the first being to Nassau in the Bahamas. I already knew what to expect on the ship. It would be massive, offer all the food you can eat and house a vibrant nightlife, which I would more than take advantage of.

The first night on the ship, I headed straight to the karaoke bar. Being a few hundred miles away from home and a little liquid courage, helped me pay tribute to James Brown by belting out “I Feel Good.”

The next day when we disembarked on the island of Cozumel, I was breathless. The water was a deep blue and the horizon resembled a postcard. Our next stop would be the beach. The way the island was set up, we would have to hail a cab to access it.

In the driver’s broken English, he told us he knew of a private beach a few miles down where for $5 per person, it would be much more enjoyable. After a quick huddle, we decided that for $5 we couldn’t lose.

As we exited the van and walked down the winding path to the beach, I felt so lucky to be there. So many people think traveling abroad is unattainable. I can’t wait to find out where my next adventure will take me. – adam jones
