National Director, Programs and Constituent Relations, BP America Inc.

Irene Brown’s appearance at the 98th NAACP convention in Detroit could
never be construed as hollow corporate posturing or expediency. Not
only are Brown – and BP America Inc. – passionate about procuring a
just balance in American life, this lifelong member of the NAACP lives
to bring about its manifestation.

“We’re longtime supporters of the NAACP,” says the national
director of programs and constituent relations for BP. “We believe that
people should have the opportunity to progress in life, and be a part
of the community, and to have our voices heard. And so the NAACP being
one of the civil rights organizations provides that for our people, and
[BP is] happy to support that.”

BP had many reasons for attending the convention. In addition
to seeking to exemplify its advocacy of the NAACP’s goals and agenda
and make clear to consumers the importance of proper energy
conservation, BP also sought to address pipeline issues and ensure that
diverse consumer sects understand which companies are really concerned
about their communities.

“We talk about the company that gives energy, lights and
transportation, as well as alternative energy sources to all our
people. That’s why we’re [here] – to give them information about
energy,” says Brown. “We have to become informed consumers of energy so
that it will last a long time, or if it’s a nonrenewable source, how to
use it wisely.” – terry shropshire
