TNT ‘Dark Blue’ Star Omari Hardwick Embraces the Jerry Bruckheimer Brand

When
talented actor Omari Hardwick was selected to play Ty on Jerry
Bruckheimer’s new TNT cop drama “Dark Blue,” a few thoughts ran through
his mind. For starters, there were few names in Hollywood capable of
commanding the same type of respect as Bruckheimer’s; so the
association was a dream come true. But then there was this other
thought; the one that told Hardwick to not only appreciate the
blessing, but work even harder to keep it. The latter thought continues
to push Hardwick, and was on full display as he sat down with rolling
out to discuss everything from the influence of Denzel Washington to
the benefits of being a former athlete.

Describe the significance of being associated with the Jerry Bruckheimer brand?
As an African American actor it’s a very powerful thing to be
associated with his brand. When you go out and follow your dream, you
have ideas about what you can do with your talent. So when you work
hard, and put your all into that vision, it just feels good to have
someone of that magnitude to stand behind you and endorse the work that
you do.

There are so many musicians that gained a lot by mimicking Michael Jackson. Is there anyone that’s comparable for you in acting?
I’ve never said that I wanted to be like someone as an actor. Since the
beginning, I’ve heard people say that I remind them of Denzel
Washington. He’s a good friend, but to be honest with you, I try not to
watch his stuff. I’ve always wanted to be my own person, and was always
confident in my own abilities. And I don’t think he’d be offended by me
saying that, because we have a good relationship, and he knows how much
I respect him.

As a former athlete, what did you take from the field to Hollywood?
The biggest thing has been my confidence. It’s interesting, because
most actors are very creative beings that operate from a place of
insecurity. For me, it’s the exact opposite. You couldn’t be insecure
on the field, so my confidence has always been my strong point. I
believe in my abilities, and myself — and that mind-set has helped [me]
a great deal.

Watch Hardwick as Ty on TNT’s “Dark Blue” Wednesdays at 10 p.m EST.
