Recording Artist/Composer, Shanachie Entertainment
Charming, eloquent and embracing are just a few words that
appropriately describe the demeanor of recording artist Ann Nesby.
However, when it comes to her singing ability, if the description isn’t
synonymous with soulfully powerful, it’s an understatement.
Since her lead vocal project with the Sounds of Blackness in the late
’90s, Nesby has been featured on various movie soundtracks and tribute
albums. And with her new album, This is Love, her talent can only be classified as true and pure.
“A lot of the music that we hear today is technically done – where you
have computers that can fix the note. Back in the day, you had to study
and know your craft. And you only had one chance once the tape was
rolling. I wanted to go back to that and touch on some serious soul in
R&B music,” she shares. Nesby feels there’s a message in her
musical contributions – both past and present – that will help revive
and put passion back into what seems to be a struggling genre.
“Coming from a group like Sounds of Blackness, I really think it’s
important for the youth to know the history of our music. It’s
important to teach the young musicians and singers the principles of
dedication to their craft,” she asserts. “They should live the
lifestyle that will teach them how to work their craft and develop it,
and they can only do that if they go to the root of the music and hear
the real soul of it.” – jamana jamison
