Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones) is a war veteran celebrating the return of his son Mike (Jonathan Tucker) from the war in Iraq. But as the reunion gets underway, Mike goes missing, so Hank goes to a local police detective (Charlize Theron) to find him. Hank’s wife Joan (Susan Sarandon) joins them to uncover the truth of his disappearance. In Mike Haggis’ new directorial effort, it’s more about the emotional side of war than the political side of it. As can be expected, Haggis indulges in pandering and extra-large social messages. Tommy Lee Jones gives a disarming, Oscar-worthy performance in this one. – forrest green III
