It was a corporeal practice beyond a balanced person’s imagination. To
some it’s genocide; to those inflicting their sadistic beliefs, it’s
business. Beyond the Gates highlights the 1994 Rwanda massacre. Filmed
on the soil where the massacre took place, survivors are included in
the film crew. It stars John Hurt as Father Christopher, a Catholic
priest and a school headmaster, and Hugh Dancy as Joe Connor, a
teacher. The two are faced with the dilemma of sticking around to aid
refugees or fleeing with the U.N. rescue team that is designated for
“whites only.” Connor’s compassion will not allow him to abandon his
star student, Maria (Claire-Hope Ashitey), who deserves a better life. -soul goddess
