The second annual BET Hip-Hop Awards show did go on as scheduled, despite the arrest of
multiple-award nominee, T.I. only hours earlier on weapons charges.

Kanye West, “Best Live Performance Award” recipient, opened with a powerful performance of
“Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” Lil Wayne,“MVP of the Year” countered with an equally impressive performance,
which paid tribute to New Orleans.

However, Chicago-born Common laid claim to the distinction of biggest winner of the night, winning
for “Lyricist of the Year,” and sharing the title for “CD of the Year,” with T.I., who also won for
best ring tone.

The show’s political undertone was amplified by riveting speeches from Dr. Cornel West, Dr. Michael
Eric Dyson, David Banner and KRS-One, who was also honored with the “I Am Hip-Hop” icon
award.

BET’s annual awards show closed with host Katt Williams alongside Louisiana’s Carwin Jones and
Bryant Purvis, of the “Jena Six,” presenting Kanye West with the award for “Best Hip-Hop Video.”
