Species IV is a testament to studio executives’ audacity. The original Species, a misogynistic mess, seemed unlikely to spawn sequels. How many ways can an already dubious concept be dramatized? In this latest version, Dr. Holander (Ben Cross), attempts to cure his niece Miranda (Helena Mattsson), of the effects of alien DNA. The film is long-winded with a documentary-like visual style, which is supposed to engender fear – but Species IVdoesn’t. –forrest green III
