CEO and Publisher, SalonSENSE magazine and HAIRSPACE.com
If she were anymore jubilant about the 10th anniversary for SalonSENSE
magazine, publisher and CEO Terri Winston would literally levitate
right off the ground. In actuality, Winston is hovering in rarified
air, the celestial queen in the galaxy of black hair care. As other
black publishing companies got mowed down by adverse market conditions
like blades of grass, Winston and SalonSENSE have blossomed into an
internationally-influential trade publication for African American
stylists and hair care proprietors.
“This is the most
incredible feeling in the world,” she says of the milestone and
celebration on Nov. 10. “Number one, a black-owned publishing company
is still in business, 3,650 days during all the turmoil and shifts that
[have] taken place. Number two, I’ve been able to maintain my No. 1
status since day one. I was able to convince people to believe in me.”
From the woman who touted a postcard to people before there was even a
magazine, winning admirers with her infectious spirit, Winston has
become one of the influential image makers that she so often profiles
in her magazine. Now, with a constellation of urban sophisticates,
civic leaders and celebrities celebrating SalonSENSE, (“We will have
Hollywood Tinseltown in Chi-Town,” she says), there is no question
about what her company will become.
“We want to just overall, become a media powerhouse in the beauty
industry, being able to produce resources that stylists will come to
depend on for years to come.” Winston will also introduce
HAIRSPRAY.com, a social networking outlet for image makers around the
world, at the party. Beauty and image makers will be able to “connect
and network with each other right there online, find a job, sell their
products, and post their works so they can get recognized,” she says.
The only question now is: what will Winston’s hair will be like on Nov. 10?
