Vice President, The Female Health Company
In 1996, the Female Health Company changed the nature of contraception
with the introduction of the Female Condom. Jack Weissman, vice
president of the Female Health Company, discusses the impact that the
Female Condom has had thus far.
How has the public responded to the Female Condom?
Women who have used it love it. It enhances the act because of the
unique design. It also puts the woman in control because she
doesn’t have to negotiate with her partner about condom use. If
her male partner elects not to wear a condom, she has her own.
Has the Female Condom been marketed to address the needs of a specific group?
We have tracked statistics from the CDC and we saw a disturbing trend
of black women becoming HIV positive. I never imagined that the disease
was so devastating to young black women. At that point, my team and I
began to re-focus our attention on the African American community.
Where are the condoms available?
Women can obtain the female condom by visiting their local health
clinic or at most national drug chains. I suggest that people take a
stand by going to their clinics and requesting it. This company also
provides program training for [using] female condoms. I’m a
father, and it’s appalling to see young women become infected
when it can be prevented. The objective is to educate the community
[and] make sure that they have access. –amir shaw
