“Buy 2, get 1 free” an ad reads, or “3 CDs for $30,” as opposed to $11.99 each. If you only want a single copy of Alicia Keys’ new album, the savings may not be worth it to you, because you would have walked away spending $18 more than you originally intended. This is where the concept of communal shopping can reveal the true value of the deal.
The ideal place for shopping as a community is in wholesale clubs such as Sam’s and Costco. By purchasing a yearly membership, you tap into massive savings. The catch is that you have to purchase items packaged in large quantities. For a single person, the concept of “buying in bulk” isn’t always appealing. But, when you shop smart, not simple, you may never look at shopping at general stores the same.
Let’s say a single person goes to a wholesale club with two friends. While a carton of 36 eggs may be too much for one person, when you divide it three ways, the savings is more evident. A box of 30 rolls of toilet paper for $7.99 at Sam’s Club divided three ways is only $2.66 per person.
Once a month, get together with a few shopping partners, make a list of everything that you need and head to your nearest wholesale club. Be sure that everyone brings cash, so when you check out, the bill can be easily divided. When you shop as a community, you’ll always beat the house. –adam jones
