It’s imperative for the next generation of consumers to understand their financial responsibilities as early as possible. That’s why the True Star Foundation decided to launch its urban youth financial literacy symposium called “The Next Check: How You Gonna Spend It?” True Star magazine employs 150 students in different capacities throughout Chicago,” explains True Star co-founder DeAnna McLeary. “One of [those capacities] is event planning. We have an event planning team headed up by two industry experts.”

McLeary and True Star co-founder, Na-tae Thompson, wanted to help young people understand the value of the dollar early, so they gathered their young charges and started putting together a program. An expert panel that included entrepreneur Dave Jeff and bank executive Daryl Newell, gave the youngsters pointers on how to save money and start a checking account. “Younger people want things right now at any cost. They need to be conscious of the cost factor and where [their] money is spent,” explains another noted speaker on the symposium panel, Harris Bank manager, Shaakira Mason. With the wealth of information proffered, every youth involved learned how to better plan their financial future. –todd williams
