what a flop: flip-flops deemed damaging
High-heels are stepping down from the throne as the most dangerous shoes for women. Flip-flops are creeping in to seize that dubious crown. The American College of Sports Medicine recently released a report that asserts prolonged wear of the popular between-your-toe-thong causes lower leg pain. These pedicure-friendly sandals have been the rage for a long time – show-offs beware.
Doctors have found that patients who wear flat shoes tend to overstretch their calf muscles, straining the Achilles tendon and the back of the leg. That’s only half the problem. Since flip-flops don’t have any straps, the toes have to put in a little overtime. Walkers tend to take shorter strides, gripping their toes to hold on to the shoe, which may result in stubbing the toes.
Warm weather makes it hard to resist these bikinis for the feet. Our toes are caged up all winter and crave the freedom offered by the spring and summer seasons. Moreover, fashionable brands like Havaianas are incredibly enticing like the Academy Award show debut of the hand-stitched Swarovski crystal-encrusted sandal given to all of the presenters. Part of every fashionista’s goal is keeping up with celebrities. What’s a habitual flip-flop wearer to do?
Recommendations:
Replace them with a sandal that offers more support.
Reserve them for the spa, hanging around the swimming pool and the beach, where they belong.
Invest in footwear that is a little more expensive, but offers support. Crocs are a good alternative – they offer a contoured insole, are moderately priced and come in a wide range of vibrant colors. –yvette caslin
