Cathy Hughes, Chris Tucker, Raven Symone power the 17th Annual Trumpet Awards

trumpet awardsBasking in the afterglow of President Barack Obama’s historic inauguration last week, the 17th annual Trumpet Awards and Trump Awards Foundation honored those who made Obama’s unprecedented and meteoric rise to power possible. The exclusive star-studded, black-tie soiree took place at the Cobb Energy Center for Performing Arts in suburban Atlanta and featured big-name recipients, including: Magic Johnson, Radio One Founder Cathy Hughes, TV One President Johnathan Rodgers, Chris Tucker, Raven-Symone, business tycoon Mike Roberts and the venerated Tuskegee Airmen.

On the previous day at the landmark Ebenezer Baptist Church, Trumpet Awards Founder Xernona Clayton honored unheralded civil rights heroes who augmented Dr. Martin Luther King’s philosophy of nonviolent, direct action. They received their footprints on the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame adjacent Ebenezer, where King often preached, and which sits across the street from the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change. Their selfless and often obscure soldiering was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act in the 1960s.

“It is the greatest day of my life,” said Radio One founder Cathy Hughes, after she was inducted into the Civil Rights Walk of Fame. “Here it is the most historic week in the history of Africans … after being brought to this country as slaves. And now we have an African American president. We are at the historic Ebenezer Baptist church and I’m being included in the Civil Rights Walk of Fame. All I can say is ‘thank, God. Thank, God. Thank, God.’ – terry shropshire
