During his history making campaign, Barack Obama proposed that automakers increase production of hybrid vehicles and urged potential car buyers to go green when making a purchase. In this week’s edition of rides, we highlight several hybrid vehicles that are fit for a president. -amir shaw 

Toyota Prius Hybrid


head of state The 2009 Toyota Prius is the ultimate vehicle for Americans who want to save money during the economic downturn. It comes equipped with a nickel-metal hybrid battery pack that saves gas and allows the vehicle to get 48 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. The 1.5-liter engine accelerates from 0-to-60 in 10 seconds.

Ford Escape Hybrid


head of stateThe Ford Escape received a tremendous endorsement when President-elect Barack Obama purchased the vehicle in 2008. Some of the features that may have intrigued Obama include keyless entry, privacy glass, foglights, DVD-based navigational system and cruise control. On the road, the Ford Escape can get 31 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Nissan Altima

altBy receiving high marks from the Environmental Protection Agency, the 2009 Nissan Altima Hybrid could be a top choice for Michelle Obama. It combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electrical motor that can produce 40-hp and 162 pound-feet of torque. The Altima Hybrid also qualifies as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle. As a result, it received the highest rating for a gasoline-burning vehicle.
