Modern jazz legend Branford Marsalis gets the anthology treatment with The Steep Anthology. It traces his sessions from his debut as a band leader on Scenes in the City to Requiem. The early tracks are a good indication of Marsalis’ willingness to push his solos to extremes, while most of the later tracks feature him at his New Orleans’ swingin’ best. Spanning 16 years from 1983-1999, this is an excellent summation of the talented saxophonist’s genius. A must-have for any fan of modern jazz. -dusty culpepper
