n it comes to the highly competitive Washington, D.C., radio market, no one holds it down like WHUR 96.3 FM. Thanks to its diverse blend of adult urban programming, the commercial station has successfully held the coveted top ranked position in the nation’s capital.
As the station’s program director, David Dickinson brings brilliance and experience to the table when overseeing music, production, and helping the station maintain consistency.
“We’re a station that’s in the community. We’re all about servicing the community in any aspect that we can. Whatever we do, we do it 100 percent for the city of Washington, the area of D.C., Maryland, and northern Virginia. We’re always on the move doing different things, whether it be in the club, on the street, or with our community service. We just try to maintain a steady product, that’s the key,” says Dickinson of the station that’s located on the campus of Howard University.
“All of our interns are fed in from our student station WHDC, so we work for the university. We’re a product of the university, but we’re a commercial, stand alone station,” adds Dickinson.
As high definition continues to be a vital part of today’s media outlets, look for WHUR to incorporate innovative ideas to stay on top.
“HD is a technology that allows us to broadcast from more than one station, so we have our regular main station and we have our world station, which is HD2,” he says. “HD2 is more of the roots of where WHUR started with jazz and talk.” – jason thompson
