Obama Stretches Lead in Battleground States and National Polls

After emerging victorious in the second national debate with Republican Sen. John McCain, or says several reputable national polls, Sen. Barack Obama has seen his lead in the presidential race rise to as much as 11 percentage points nationally. Two separate polls substantiate the Illinois junior senator’s widening gap over the Arizona veteran legislator in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania and Ohio. The Morning Call tracking poll and Strategic Vision survey in the Keystone State figure Obama’s lead as 12 and 14 percentage points, respectively. Another poll, the Real Clear Politics average of Pennsylvania polls, says Obama’s lead is at 13.8.
In the 10 major national polls conducted since the close of September, Obama has average 49.1% and McCain has averaged 43.5%. That leaves a significant percentage of voters who report they are either undecided, do not intend to vote, or intend to vote for a third-party candidate, says the Associated Press.
Perhaps not coincidentally, McCain has also revved up the attack machine against Obama in the same time frame that has seen the lead expand in his opponents’ favor. McCain and vice presidential running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, have tried to paint Obama as a terrorist sympathizer, noting that Obama’s campaign for his Senate seat began in the home of William Ayers, a 1960s anti-war militant. Ayers is an unrepentant former member of the Weather Underground, a left-wing radical organization that carried out bombings of government buildings nationwide during that turbulent decade. He is now a university professor in the Chicago area.
Obama has repeatedly decried Ayers’ Weather Underground activities as ‘dispicable’ and accused McCain of trying to ‘score cheap political points’ for continuously raising the issue at rallies nationwide. –terry shropshire
