Not many newcomers can count on being signed by one of hip-hop’s legendary icons. However, thanks to DJ Kid Capri, that’s exactly how Bronx-bred newcomer Budda Early is entering the stage.

As one of the first artists signed to Capri’s record label, No Kid’N Records, Early counts on the DJ’s strong support when in the studio. “He gave me the opportunity to just do me, he wasn’t sitting up under me telling me which way to record,” he says. The resulting product is Early’s upcoming debut album, From the P.M. to the A.M. Although he credits hip-hop’s early stages for its influence on his music, don’t expect the self-proclaimed “Bronx Borough President” to limit himself to one musical sound.

“[You] can’t really put me into one category – I do all types of music. I work with all types of people. There’s no one style or sound,” he says. “I’ve done rock’n’roll joints, techno joints. I just let the beat tell me where to go and I go right there.”

While he puts the finishing touches on his album, Early is using the mixtape arena to introduce his sound to music fans. Most recently, he released The Treatment: Vol. 2. Acknowledging that mixtapes are nothing new, Early tried a different approach to the tried-and-true promotional vehicle, placing mostly original material on it. “The treatment is more like an album . I didn’t do too many freestyles,” explains Early. “Once you hear it all together, it so much more than just a mixtape.” –ivory m. jones
