In
what is sure to be the most over-hyped bit of celebrity controversy
this week; ‘celebutante’ and Samantha Ronson’s
‘special friend,’ Lindsay Lohan made a
politically-incorrect gaffe during an interview on “Access
Hollywood.” When asked how she felt on the night of the election,
Lohan, an Obama supporter, said that she was excited at the election of
‘our first colored president.’ The choice of words seemed
to go unnoticed by interviewer Maria Menounos and Lohan seemed to be
slightly out of it, with her hair disheveled and her makeup looking a
little sloppy. She continued to ruminate on Obama’s historic win,
calling the night ‘amazing’ and ‘unbelievable.’
Of course, once
TMZ.com got hold of the footage, they plastered it on their website
with the tag: Lindsay Lohan: Hooray for the ‘Coloreds.’
Whether or not Lohan said coloreds while thinking ‘people of
color,’ people have to decide what is and what is not racist.
Granted, hearing the word ‘colored’ does make most young
black folk think Mississippi circa 1962; but is the word undeniably
inflammatory hate-speech? Don’t think so. ‘Colored’
is an antiquated term, no doubt; but to deem the use of the word racist
may be a little much. Racially-insensitive? Sure. But let’s skip
the marches and protests on this one, people… –todd williams
