sheryl sellaway – tips for climbing the corporate ladder
Executive Director of PR, Verizon Sheryl Sellaway is smiling proudly. Standing backstage at the Verizon Wireless “How Sweet the Sound” final competition, as the sounds of America’s top gospel choirs pour in from the stage, it’s easy to see why Sellaway is so enthused. She has helped shepherd the nationwide competition and showcased some of America’s greatest choirs. The event, which also featured gospel luminaries like Marvin Sapp and Donald Lawrence, was a smashing success. The seeds for Sellaway’s success were sown years ago, and in climbing the corporate ladder, she’s learned to maximize her potential. Sellaway’s advice on ascending the corporate ladder: “Take your time and get to really know your craft. Sharpen your tools, and have the willingness to learn from others. Learn as much as you can, [and] if you’re going to be a communications professional, stay on top of what’s going on in the world. Be willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.” On the response to “How Sweet the Sound” choir competition in the African American community: “We have received an incredible amount of outstanding feedback from customers, from employees, from people who just have a love for gospel music and just want to come out and have a good time. They are very appreciative of the fact that we have stellar artists performing. There are some prizes and it gets people very excited about what we are doing.” Why she loves her job: “I have a responsibility for public relations, so I take on the task of managing media relations, community affairs and employee communications. One of the things I like – amongst many – is the fact that [Verizon] has an awesome product and I believe that our brand is very strong. It’s an easy sell to the community and I appreciate the opportunity to do that. “-todd williams |
