Comedienne, Radio Personality
Drive
time radio can make every morning feel like a Monday when your dial is
set on the wrong station or you’re tuned in to the the wrong
deejay. Coco of WJLB’s “Coco, Foolish & Mr. Chase in
the Morning” manages to ease morning listeners into the work week
with her special brand of comedy and her irascible spirit. Rolling out caught up with the popular comedian between shows to talk with her about current projects and future plans. – roz edward and apryl edwards
Why did you decide to become a comedian?
Well, I sang, and did theater when I was in school. I knew I was funny
so I started to focus on what I had to do to get on stage … The funny
thing, though, is that everybody thinks they can be a comedian …
People know when they can’t sing, or dance, or act … but they
don’t know when they’re not funny.
What are the challenges for women in your industry?
It’s still a good ol’ boys network. A man can go onstage
and say something and it’s hilarious. A woman can go on stage and
say the same thing and it’s not cool … I like dangling on the
edge, taking risk and being controversial to a degree, but you do have
to learn to censor yourself.
What are you working on now?
I’ve got several projects under one umbrella. We’ve
established a scholarship foundation for young people … and
we’re helping teen age fathers develop into … men who are
actively involved in raising their children. At Coco’s
House [a nonprofit organization] we’re also teaching young people
the art of creative expression through developing their writiing skills
and reinforcing self-esteem.
What are your plans for the future?
I’d like to do a movie. And I’d like to do a sitcom. I
would also like to do a one-woman show. All I really need is investors
and a tour bus.
