With
a new hit television show on Comedy Central rising rapidly in the
Nielsen ratings, life is a dream for comedian David Alan Grier. The
“In Living Color” alumnus has plenty to be thankful for,
but during a recent sit down with rolling out, his career took a notable backseat to the newest addition in his life: a beautiful baby girl. –djr
You seem to be a lot happier these days. Is that a fair assumption?
It would be. Life is good. I have a lot to be thankful for.
‘Chocolate News’ is doing well on Comedy Central, and
I’m really proud about that, because I have literally been
working on that show for several years now. So for it to finally
happen, and for it to be received as well as it has, is a tremendous
feeling. But even if the show would have tanked, I’m still at a
great place in my life because of my daughter.
Congratulations. So how has your material changed over the years, and especially now that you are a father?
Well, I’m a lot older, and hopefully, a lot wiser. So I
don’t look at the world the same way that I did when I was
younger. And now that I’m a father, you see that part of my life
showing up in my material. Look at me, I’m old. I’m old
with a baby girl. If that isn’t funny, then I don’t know
what is. My life just seems to have a way of writing its own material.
Are you excited about fatherhood, even if it is coming later in life?
Absolutely. My daughter is the best thing that could have ever happened
to me, as it has given me a deeper appreciation of life and love. Of
course, I’m terrified of how it’s going to be when
she’s old enough to date boys. I’m going to be too old to
stop her from doing anything. She could probably be having sex right in
front of me, and I’d be too senile to stop her.
