Describing
DJ Artime’s music is like trying to single out the tastiest
ingredient in a bowl of good gumbo. A product of Cuban parents, the
Miami-raised musician had a heavy Latin influence in his home, but it
was his older brothers who introduced him to American rock and
hip-hop.
Coming up on
artists like Red Hot Chilli Peppers and 2 Live Crew, Artime instantly
fell in love with music. Add the fact that the official deejay for
Yelawolf studied jazz in school, and the stage is set for one of the
South’s most diverse artists. “Sometimes it’s a
blessing and a curse because I don’t know what direction I want
to go in, but I love it,” Artime says. “I love all types of
music.”
While spending time between his
native Miami and Atlanta, Artime has managed to be as all over the
place as his musical sound. When he’s not spinning for some of
the hottest clubs in south Florida, Artime is touring with Yelawolf, an
artist who he says represents a new form of hip-hop artist. “I
think guys like The Cool Kids are taking old-school sounds and are kind
of putting a new spin on it. I think that’s what a lot of these
groups are doing,” he says. “As far as Yelawolf goes,
we’re trying to put a classic spin on live music —
that’s our take.” –gavin phillip godfrey
