Atlanta Urban League, Economic Empowerment Tour

The National Urban League has long been on the
front lines of economic empowerment and raising the community’s
fiscal awareness. The League has launched the Economic Empowerment Tour
to continue on that path and make sure citizens understand how best
they can navigate the murky waters of the current recession.

“The NUL has created this tour to take
resources and career opportunities around the country to help empower
communities,” explains Nancy Flake Johnson, president and CEO of
the Atlanta Urban League.

“With the economic
challenges people are facing, [and] the job losses in our country,
[the] time for people to be connected with employment, career or
business opportunities is now,” she says. “This is an
opportunity for citizens to come out, get their questions about the
economy answered, and [learn] what we can do to survive and even thrive
in what appears to be trying times.”

Featuring
in-house GED programs, multilevel math courses, and courses in computer
training; the tour offers a variety of empowering educational choices.

The
Economic Empowerment Tour has had much success thus far, and Johnson
feels that with the timeliness of the courses, everyone can gain
something from attending. “Everybody wants to live a quality life
and work toward the middle class,” Johnson feels. “This is
what the Urban Leagues are about across the nation. We do this every
day. Anytime we can move our folks forward, it’s good
thing.”–todd williams
