Atlanta
may be known for hip-hop, but if J. Santana has anything to do with it,
that’s about to change. Although J. is a native of Detroit, since
relocating to Atlanta in March of 2008, he’s been intent on
spreading his brand of eclectic gospel to the masses.

“The overall message that I’m trying to get across to the
listeners is no matter what you go through in life, no matter what
you’ve been through in the past or present, you can still
triumph,” he says. “I’m an ex-gang banger and there
were a lot of odds against me, so this album is really speaking to my
life.”

Fittingly titled Triumph, his new independent album has been
well-received thus far. J., who began making gospel music at age 18, is
excited about the opportunity to spread his light to the masses.

“By me being from the streets, … the only way for me to be me
is to make music that reminds me of the music that I grew up around and
just convey the message of God in it,” he says.

J., who wrote every cut on his debut album, says that music should be a
testament to people’s ability to triumph regardless of
circumstances. With songs like the emotive autobiographical,
“Broken Spirit” he’s confident in his ability to
touch people.

“I feel like there’s not really an artist that caters to
the streets,” he says. “Nobody is covering that street side
— drug dealers, prostitutes, strippers — those are the
people that I want to reach with my music.” –j.h.
