Update: Still no resolution as Republic Window and Doors sit-in enters day six
Negotiations between the union and Bank of America have continued through today. Previous reports stated that BOA had reached an agreement with union and Republic Windows and Doors in regards to a sit-in of 200 laid-off factory employees.
Today, the union officials and BOA met at 1 p.m. (CST) to discuss their negotiations. Workers moved from the factory to a downtown branch to show support and demand that the bank also work to stop foreclosures. According to Leah Fried of the United Electrical Workers union, there haven’t been any final agreements reached. Though progress has been made, all settlements will receive approval pending a vote from factory’s employees.
Recently JP Morgan Chase, whose subsidiary owns 40 percent of Republic Windows and Doors, gave $400,000 to aid in the payment of the workers. According to the union, the workers are each owed anywhere from $3,500-4,000 in severance pay. In total, with severance and vacation pay, the workers are owed $1.5 million. – gavin philip godfrey
