As
the sun set on yet another picture perfect day in Nassau, Bahamas, the
ensuing star-filled night would belong to movie producer and director
Lee Daniels. As the producer of Halle Berry’s Oscar winning turn
in Monster’s Ball, and the director of critically acclaimed flick Tennessee starring Mariah Carey, Daniels opened the 5th Annual Bahamas International Film Festival with an exclusive screening of Tennessee. In a special director’s segment following the film, Daniels was all too happy to share his wisdom with rolling out’s special invited guests.
How does it feel to have your movie open at the Bahamas International Film Festival?
“It
feels great. I always love coming to the Bahamas, and the people here
are so receptive. I love what the film festival is trying to
accomplish, so I’m glad that I can support them in this
way.”
Tennessee
contained some very strong themes of family and forgiveness that seemed
to be very personal to you. How did it feel to get those messages out
to the public?
“Making films is
like going to a good therapist. So it felt good to deal with some
issues that I had been holding on to, and hadn’t been able to
process early on in life. I hope that the message comes across clearly
and that other people can relate to the message and apply it to their
own lives.”
What advice can you give aspiring film directors and actors who may be looking to follow in your footsteps?
“Stay
true to yourself. If you work hard and are honest with your work, then
people will relate to your experiences, and you will find yourself
getting farther along in your career.”
