Skip Mason
On Why HBCUs Are Still Top Priority
As
vice president of student services for Morehouse College, Skip Mason is
a daily witness to the benefits that historically black colleges and
universities provide to students of color. As the newly elected
president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Mason emphasizes the
importance of maintaining those strong ties to HBCUs for the coming
generations.
“It’s obvious that
if we don’t support our historically black colleges and students.
We face a doomed world and a doomed society,” he says
matter-of-factly. “We must continue to educate our young African
American males and females and create an opportunity for them to get a
good education.”
Mason himself is an
example of the benefits of attending an HBCU. “I am employed at a
historically black college,” he says. “And I attended
Morris Brown College.”
Mason was
present at the 2008 Mayor’s Masked Ball and was quick to remind
everyone that the lavish event is designed to raise money for the
United Negro College Fund. “When people come out, it’s not
only a good time to create celebration,” he shared.
“It’s also an opportunity to support a good cause, the
United Negro College Fund.”
The
president-elect also has a long history with the Ball.
“I’ve been coming here for 20-plus years,” he says.
“I started working as a volunteer and I remember the first
Mayor’s Masked Ball.”-todd williams
