Emil Jones Jr.

Friends, family and some of the who’s who of black Chicago came out to the historic South Shore Cultural Center to honor recently retired Illinois state Senate President Emil Jones Jr. Jones has been hailed as a true political leader, most notably for his work with children’s health care reform in his state. Jones is also known as a political mentor to President-elect Barack Obama, and one of the driving forces behind both Obama’s Senate and presidential victories. Jones is hailed as a political pioneer.

As part of a fundraiser for Real Men Charities, the good old-fashioned roast and toast featured CNN’s Roland Martin, Emil Jones III and Deborah Crable, the former “Ebony/Jet Showcase” host. The roasters took turns sharing stories that poked fun at Jones’ celebrated past and present, his life and his career. The man Obama lovingly refers to as, “The Godfather,” wore a large gold chain and cowboy boots. The latter, drew much attention from Martin.“Those are some interesting boots there,” he said pointing at Jones’ feet. Jones quickly replied, “These are Western boots!” As the crowd’s uproarious laughter filled the auditorium, Martin dealt the final blow. “You’re not even from Texas,” he fired back.
