it's your turn: volunteer on dr. king's national holiday

Calling all volunteers and those fortunate workers who have been granted a day off on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, the national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. If you haven’t made plans to travel to Washington, D.C., for the 2009 presidential inauguration, then The King Center and a host of other community based organizations around the city need your helping hand.

Allstate Insurance Company’s initiative, the Allstate Beyond February Give Back Day, encourages volunteerism, and donating your time, talent and energy to strengthen your community.

Dr. King’s youngest daughter, Bernice King, offers, “Beyond February Give Back Day reinforces the importance of giving back to your community in the spirit of my father and everything he fought for. But an even greater tribute to my father’s legacy is evidenced by the people who demonstrate the passion and the commitment to serve their communities throughout the year, not just on MLK Day or during Black History Month.”

Other organizations that have joined the campaign are The Ryan Cameron Foundation, 100 Black Men of America, 100 Black Women of America and the Atlanta ToolBank.

Thousands of volunteers will gather at a rally at The King Center after the annual ecumenical service. During the event, Allstate and King family representatives will mobilize and encourage participants to put their hands to good use.
